Psychotherapy
As a psychoanalytically trained therapist, I subscribe to the Socratic belief that an unexamined life is not worth living. I invite clients to be curious about their unconscious minds and how early experiences impact the way they understand themselves and others. I have personally found that such insight has the potential to fundamentally change the way we understand ourselves, freeing us up to live a more genuine and less conflicted life. However, experience has also taught me that no person is fully self-aware and most of us can benefit from working with a trusted therapist.
Psychoanalysis
While psychoanalysis is frequently caricatured as a treatment focused on the past, in fact, it is best suited for those who wish to live a more meaningful existence in the present. Psychoanalysis has evolved since its inception over a century ago, though the basic principles on which it was founded continue to resonate for those who seek to better understand themselves and their relationships with others.
Couples Counseling
People enter into, remain in, and often leave relationships for many different reasons. Some will stay in unhappy relationships for years, continuing to fight with partners and growing ever more resentful in the process. These couples frequently have difficulty voicing their individual needs and being seen within the relationship.
About Me
I am a licensed clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst with a private practice in Dupont Circle, where I work with individuals and couples. As a psychoanalyst, I believe our early experiences often shape the way we relate to ourselves and others.
I help individuals and couples examine patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that often have their origins in early life experiences and may continue to generate feelings of unhappiness. Because therapy occurs within a relationship, I will often encourage clients to explore our relationship in therapy as a window into how they relate to others in their lives. I am also guided by cultural factors and believe that such issues are essential to consider when thinking about the people with whom I work.
Although I emphasize the importance of self-awareness and reflection, I also feel comfortable incorporating other clinical interventions depending on a client’s presenting issues, level of readiness for therapy, and cultural background. In other words, I try to be flexible when working with people and tailor my approach to their unique dynamics.
